Over many decades, Virginia has seen seventy-four state executives, each one of them men. On Tuesday, Abigail Spanberger overcame this longstanding tradition by being elected as the first female governor in the commonwealth's history.
Ex- US representative and CIA operative triumphed with a election strategy that stressed cost-of-living issues and carefully challenged Trump-era measures as opposed to the individual.
Born in a New Jersey town on a summer day in 1979, she moved to a Richmond area at her early teens. Her dad was an army veteran who later pursued a career in law enforcement; her mother was a nurse and community helper.
She studied at the Virginia's flagship university, receiving a diploma in literary arts. Post-graduation, she worked briefly as a educator before embarking on a career in public service.
“I was raised believing that I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and I did,” she told followers at a rally in coastal Virginia over the weekend.
At the US Postal Inspection Service, she investigated involving narcotics, abusers and money launderers. She executed court mandates, often being the only woman on the arrest team. She then joined the Central Intelligence Agency and specialized in national security, working covertly and internationally.
In that year, she and her husband Adam, an engineer, faced a decision. Living on the west coast, they were contemplating another overseas assignment. They pulled out a globe and asked their eldest daughter, then in kindergarten, where they should go. the commonwealth, she replied, because “all our loved ones lives in Virginia”.
Spanberger recalled at her rally: “And so we chose to transition from a path of service to country, to service to community because she was right. Those dear to us are in Virginia.”
Back in Virginia, she joined Moms Demand Action, which works against firearm incidents, and founded a Girl Scout troop. In 2017, she decided to campaign for the House, which people told her was a “crazy endeavour” because the party hadn't had secured the congressional seat in 50 years.
“But I saw what the president was doing with his authority and how he was pitting neighbour against neighbour. And I noticed my member of Congress over and over again vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act. And I felt I had to do something. So spoiler: I won.”
In the capital, she rapidly became associated with the centrist group, a collection of centrist and budget-conscious Democrats. She prioritized lower-profile issues: expanding internet access to the countryside, combating narcotics trade and veterans’ services.
She built a reputation for working with Republicans and was consistently rated as the most cooperative member of the state's congressmembers. She was vocal about messaging that she believed turned off independents, cautioning her fellow Democrats against partisan language that could be used against them in tight races.
Along with Congresswomen a former CIA analyst and Mikie Sherrill, she was dubbed a member of the “centrist alliance” in contrast to the left-leaning “squad” of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
In that autumn, she declared she would not seek re-election for a another term and would instead run for governor in the next election.
Her platform centred on themes of public service, support for education and public works and defense of democratic institutions. Her intelligence experience lent her credibility on defense issues and she spoke of government work as a vocation rather than a job.
This helped her to counter Republican opponent her challenger's attacks on cultural issues, including the assertion that she is an extremist on individual freedoms and medical services for the LGBTQ+ community.
Spanberger, who consistently argued that individual districts should decide whether transgender students can participate in competitive sports, portrayed her opponent as the contender more misaligned with the middle of the commonwealth's citizens.
