Cameroon Political Opposition Figure Confronts Legal Action Regarding Electoral Turmoil, Government Declares

Political Protest in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon express anger over the fact that the president has secured an eighth consecutive term

The nation's Minister of the Interior Paul Atanga Nji has stated that opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over accusations that he incited "violent electoral rallies".

No fewer than 4 demonstrators have been lost their lives during confrontations between law enforcement and protesters since the electoral process on October 12, with the 92-year-old head of state securing an eighth presidential mandate.

The opposition leader asserts that he was the true winner, a claim disputed by Biya's ruling party, the ruling CPDM.

Violent crackdowns by security personnel on protesters have concerned the global community, with the United Nations, AU and European Union calling for restraint.

Minister's Accusations

Earlier this week, Nji alleged Tchiroma Bakary of coordinating what he described as "illegal" demonstrations resulting in the deaths, and also criticised him for claiming win in the presidential race.

He noted that the opposition leader's "co-conspirators involved in an rebellious scheme" will also be prosecuted.

Vote Outcome

Paul Biya, who came to power in the early 80s and is now the world's oldest head of state, won the 12 October vote with a majority of the vote, compared to a significant minority for the challenger, according to the electoral authority.

Leader's Stance

Issa Tchiroma is has not yet commented to the authorities' move to prosecute him, but he had previously stated that he refused to acknowledge a stolen vote - and that he was not afraid of being taken into custody.

When results were announced, he claimed that gunmen used lethal force on demonstrators gathered near his home in Garoua, fatally wounding at least 2 individuals.

Probe Launched

Earlier this week, the interior minister revealed that an investigation would be started into unrest surrounding the declaration of the poll figures.

"In the course of these incidents, some of the individuals involved were killed," he commented, without offering a exact count of demonstrators who have been lost their lives in the incidents.

Nji noted that a number of members of the law enforcement also received major harm.

Present Conditions

While Nji asserted the condition throughout Cameroon was now stable, protesters are still demonstrating in certain regions of the nation, especially in these two cities, where protesters established obstructions on that day, and ignited tires on the streets.

Observers warn that the post-electoral violence could lead the country into a leadership vacuum.
