Close to 25,000 Experiencing Power in South-East Queensland and Victoria Following Severe Weather Systems

Nearly twenty-five thousand residences in south-east Queensland found themselves lacking electricity on Monday morning after intense storm systems passed over the area, producing wind gusts topping 109km/h.

Large Ice Stones and Broad Impact

Homeowners reported giant hailstones measuring up to 7cm in certain regions. Meteorological experts confirmed that different parts across the state had been affected by substantial ice precipitation.

Response teams were attempting to repair electricity service throughout the affected regions, with approximately seventy teams deployed to address the numerous electricity disruptions.

Victoria's Weather Woes

At the same time, nearly one thousand households in the southern state also faced power outages after the metropolitan area experienced its wettest day in a year and a half.

Rescue organizations received 598 requests for assistance across the state, primarily for property damage but also for fallen timber and flooding.

  • Hoppers Crossing - various assistance requests
  • Wyndham area - 179 emergency requests

At one point on yesterday, more than 28,000 power users in the state were experiencing outages.

Weather Forecast

Humid circumstances were forecast to persist along large portions of the state's eastern regions this coming days as a atmospheric system continued to pull in damp air against the shoreline.

The following day was forecast to be the heaviest precipitation period, with persistent storm activity predicted across multiple regions of both states.

Health Warning

Public health experts alerted that there was an greater possibility of thunderstorm-induced asthma across the countryside regions, specifically given the ongoing climate situation.

This caution comes after past events where analogous circumstances led to substantial respiratory problems in the state.
