The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
