In a decisive runoff election, ultra-conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidential office in Chile.
With over 99% of ballots counted, Kast secured 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having previously been beaten by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Known for his staunch socially conservative views and admiration for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was largely focused on promises to address growing insecurity and drastically restrict immigration.
He consistently pointed to immigrants, notably the roughly 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the race, he delivered an final demand for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face removal.
His plans envisioned controversial measures such as constructing holding facilities, high walls, electric fences, and increasing the armed forces presence on the northern frontier.
Many commentators interpret Kast's win as aligning with a larger right-wing trend in South America, following recent political outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other analysts also view it as a continuation of the regular swing of power between left and right-wing administrations since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Despite his decisive popular vote triumph, Kast does not have an absolute majority in parliament, neither in the lower house nor the Senate, even when various right-leaning parties are combined together.
This legislative landscape may hinder his plans, such as a promise to cut public spending by a significant sum within 18 months—a proposal for which he has yet to offered concrete steps.
"We have numerous aspects about what a Kast administration will be that remain unclear because he has not detailed his methods for do them," said a political science professor.
The professor added, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is almost certain we will see adjustment measures associated with the right. But where there is far less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his central theme throughout the campaign."
