The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The ex-president was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.
This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a assembly of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of Bolsonaro's transfer to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.
The legal document highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist US President President Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also asked that he be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
He was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. His successor was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
