Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. According to reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
