The scientist and activist, a bioastronautics research scientist, was aboard the New Shepard NS-31 rocket in Spring 2025.

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included well-known figures.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the mission, such as increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The self-operating spacecraft departed Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The group of women also featured leaders in multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the mission is a private space firm established by a Amazon founder.
