Throughout the 2016 US presidential election campaign, Viktor Orbán stood out as the only head of an EU nation to support the Republican candidate. This support came as no shock, given the Hungarian leader's adoption of controversial ideas such as great replacement ideology and the suppression of media freedom. Observers observe that Mr Orbán practically laid the groundwork for Trump's base, with ex-Trump adviser Steve Bannon hailing him as a precursor to Trump.
In recent days, amid key votes in Hungary just approaching in six months, the US president returned some political favors. As Mr Orbán pursues a fifth term in office leading a nation he calls an illiberal democracy, his Fidesz party currently trails in surveys. An official trip to Washington resulted in not just a few signed Maga baseball caps; it brought far more significant electoral advantages.
Although before lecturing EU countries on the need to eliminate all resource supplies from Russia, and warning of sanctions against nations persisting to purchase Russian crude, Donald Trump consented to grant a unique waiver for Hungary – the top consumer among EU members of Russian oil. According to Mr Orbán, the US government also agreed to extend a “financial shield” to Budapest if it faces any upcoming challenges, especially as Brussels persists in holding back large sums from the EU to Hungary due to rule-of-law breaches.
The details of this deal are vague. However Donald Trump has shown his inclination to assist like-minded partners when the United States granted a a $20 billion loan to Argentina’s far-right president, the South American leader. While Orbán failed to obtain a presidential tour to the Hungarian capital, the discussions nonetheless turned out to be a productive session.
Within EU circles, Trump's actions likely highlighted the geopolitical stakes of the coming election, prior to which the opposition candidate, Magyar, holds a solid advantage in the polls. Heads of state know not to anticipate principled consistency from the Trump White House, and are familiar with the Trump's attempts to undermine the European Union. Yet the waiver for Hungary – secured through an pledge to purchase American natural gas and nuclear power – blatantly weakens European goals to eliminate Russian fossil fuel imports by the year 2027.
Péter Magyar has avoided pledging a drastic turnaround on the war in Ukraine, and centered his campaign on home affairs, while highlighting the importance for Hungary to finally behave as a constructive EU member. Following repeated disruptions, EU officials can only wait and hope. The Hungarian leader's apathy to basic EU values, like the upholding of minority rights and the freedom of non-governmental organizations, has remained a humiliating embarrassment for the European Union. His ongoing blocking tactics regarding Ukrainian matters could harm its future security.
