Security Council representatives approved to an American proposal removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria prior to his Washington trip the following week.
Sharaa was named transitional president after leading an insurgent campaign that drove out Bashar al-Assad in winter 2024, bringing to a close thirteen long years of domestic strife.
The US representative to the UN Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that acknowledged Syria entered "a different period" after Assad's removal.
He had been subject to global penalties in his role as head of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), previously associated with the terrorist network. America delisted the organization from the catalog of foreign terror groups in July.
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on penalties against the Syrian interior official the interior minister.
Syria's foreign minister applauded the lifting of the sanctions, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation to the United States and allied countries for their support of Syria and its people."
Sharaa's White House visit on Monday comes after US President Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president had made "good progress" working toward stability to the war-torn country.
The two leaders convened initially during May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia on a tour of the region.
Subsequent to that discussion, America's leader characterized Sharaa as a "tough guy" possessing a "powerful background".
His former militant faction was al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria until he severed ties back in 2016.
The upcoming meeting will not be his initial visit to America in the current year. This past fall, he became the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to address the UN General Assembly at UN headquarters in almost 60 years.
In his speech, he stated the country had been "regaining its deserved status within the global community" and demonstrated unity with the people of Gaza.
