The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has declared he is willing to hold a national election amid the ongoing war, on the condition that the Verkhovna Rada and international allies approve. This announcement comes after accusations from Donald Trump that he was clinging to power.
Visibly irritated by the comments from overseas, Zelenskyy emphasized that "This question for the citizens of Ukraine, rather than for individuals from other nations, with all due respect to our friends."
However, he pledged to examine options for holding a election in the near future. "Given that this question is now being raised by the leader of the U.S., our ally, I will respond briefly: listen, I am ready for elections," Zelenskyy said on Tuesday night.
"Moreover, I am requesting ... the United States to support me, possibly together with European colleagues, to ensure security for the polls, and then within the coming two to three months Ukraine will be prepared to hold the elections. I personally have the determination and readiness for this," he concluded.
This criticism were made by Trump in a lengthy interview conducted by the publication Politico earlier on Tuesday. "They haven't had an election in a considerable period," said the American leader. "You know, they speak of a democratic nation, but it reaches a point where it's no longer democratic any more."
Zelenskyy's presidential term officially ended in May of last year, but the country's fundamental law bans elections during armed conflict. Even, his political opponents have stated repeatedly that safety and political considerations make it impossible organizing an election while the war continues.
"Doing so would only be detrimental," stated an opposition MP. "He's the commander-in-chief, and the country is in a position where we don't have that possibility, regardless of disagreements we might have with him. It would only benefit the enemy," he continued.
Zelenskyy highlighted two major questions that must be resolved: the logistical challenge of permitting military personnel, the many internally displaced persons, and those in occupied territories to vote, and secondly, how to legally hold elections while a state of war is in effect.
He asked for counsel from partner nations on safeguarding the elections, and from MPs on how to modify the law to permit a vote. "{I am waiting for ideas from partners, I am awaiting suggestions from our MPs, and I am prepared to go to the elections," affirmed Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy was speaking while traveling back to Ukraine after concluding a diplomatic tour to multiple EU nations. This comes as the U.S. administration has reportedly been pushing on Kyiv to sign a peace deal.
Earlier, Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., claimed at a forum that Zelenskyy was dragging out the war due to concerns of electoral defeat. He also suggested that his father might "walk away" from Ukraine if the conflict continues. "{It's not true. But it's not precisely wrong," said Trump, when asked about his son's allegation.
It has been suggested that the U.S. has suggested Ukraine should cede the eastern territories to secure peace, a move that would be extremely unpopular within Ukraine. Furthermore, there is presently no evidence that Russia is prepared to sign any agreement, even a deal that might seem favorable to Moscow.
